Privilege to receive a scholarship, says Nazri
Nazri also said students who did well in public examinations but came from well-to-do backgrounds also deserved a scholarship.
To another question by Ahmad Maslan (BN - Pontian) to increase the number of scholarships, Nazri said the Government could not afford to give 2,000 now.
He explained that a student is granted scholarship based on academic performance (70%) and interview, background and extra-curricular activities (30%).
I agreed that scholarship should be granted to students with good academic performance. However, granting scholarship to students from families with 'well-to-do' background do not seems to be a wise idea. I believe the most important aim of scholarships are to financially support the needy with excellent results. As a key to higher educational level and finally, to increase their living standard.
Moreover, our government is poor and could not even afford to provide 2000 scholarships to the students. Government should act wisely.
As for the best students, despite their backgrounds, we can reward them with prizes and incentive. I hope parents from well-off families can understand the importance of scholarship to those who really need them.
